Frequently asked questions

If your answer is not here, write to us: we reply.

What is the .gm file I am asked to save?

It is your personal key, along with the keys of the groups you belong to. The app creates it on your machine; it is never sent to us. That file is what lets you decrypt your vault on a new device.

I lost my key file. Can you recover my passwords?

No, and nobody can. We only store encrypted data, with no way to read it. That is the price of encryption without a back door. Back that file up on separate media, such as a USB stick kept elsewhere.

How do I install the app on a second computer?

Install the app, sign in with your email address, then import your key file. Your vault is decrypted locally from there.

How does group sharing work?

Each group has its own key. A shared item is encrypted with the group key, and every member holds a copy. The owner decides whether members may edit it; if not, they can propose a change, which the owner accepts or declines.

I was using the previous version of Cryptauk. What should I do?

Your data has been carried over. Install the new app, activate your account with the code sent by email, then import your existing key file: it remains valid. Important: as long as you keep using the old app, changes made there will not appear in the new one.

Does the app update itself?

Yes. It checks at launch and then every four hours, downloading only the differences between your version and the new one.

What can you see of my data?

Labels, usernames and website addresses, which power sorting and search. Never passwords, nor the contents of notes and files. The Security page gives the exact list.

Can I delete my account?

Yes — write to us from the account's email address, and it is deleted along with all of its data, with no copy kept.
